The Weekly Missive 12/1
I Will Tell You This: It's Friday and I've got some fun stuff to share.
Quote of the week: “I don’t know if I’m bad at sleeping or just really, really, really good at thinking.” (from a meme I shared on Instagram)
Post of the week: Spectacular Holiday Light Displays Around the South. One is near us. Every year I say we should go. Then we don’t. I need to make this a priority.
What I’m reading: I’m reading an early copy of a a book by a long-time favorite, Hannah Richell. This one is called The Search Party and is about a group of longtime friends who all go glamping together… and something terrible happens. It’s out January 16th 2024 so you don’t have long to wait for it to be released.
What I’m listening to: my Pandora writing station, which is a mishmash of The Blue Nile, Bryan Ferry, Chris Rea, and other obscure music you’ve probably never heard of. I’ve written to the same station since I wrote my first novel. I can’t imagine not listening to it when I write— it has a Pavlovian effect.
What I’m watching: We are hoping to start the new season of Fargo this weekend! Cannot wait!
What I’m googling: since I’m editing, it’s a lot of fact checking the stuff I’ve written
What I’m cooking: I cooked a second Thanksgiving dinner last weekend, plus a big ole pot of chili. So it’s been a lot of leftovers at our house this week, and I was happy about it.
What I’m following (True Crime): Was interested to hear that Kevin Franke has filed for a divorce from Ruby. Not surprised, but interested in this latest development, which seemed inevitable. I also watched updates on the latest hearing in the Chad Doerman case.
What I’m learning: This week I learned the origin of the term “God bless you.:”
Saying, “God bless you,” as a polite response to the common human function of sneezing originated with Pope Gregory I in ancient Rome during the days of the devastating bubonic plague, according to Southern Living. It was reported that he suggested the quick prayer, “God bless you,” after someone sneezed to protect them from the ravages of the plague. (source: christianity.com)
What I’m writing: Edits have completely taken over my life this week.
Gratitude: my home, small town life, friends, family, quiet places to write, planners, the start of Vlogmas on You Tube, blessings, and wine

(Though I’ve adapted it, this format was originally inspired by author Kim Hooper’s blog. I loved her novel No Hiding in Boise. You should check it out.)
